Lego leverages renewable energy and efficiency measures to reduce operational emissions
The Lego Group is advancing its decarbonization strategy by expanding renewable energy capacity, including solar installations in Vietnam, Denmark, and Virginia, while transitioning vehicle fleets to electric power.

- In a blog post published last week, the toymaker detailed measures to cut scope 1 emissions, including using renewable energy to power heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems at its new factory in Vietnam, and transitioning away from gas heating to the local district heating network—predominantly powered by renewable energy—at its headquarters in Billund, Denmark.
- For scope 2 reductions, the company said its strategy centers on decreasing energy consumption and increasing the share of renewable energy, such as solar. Lego noted that 5.8% of its energy use is now supported by renewable energy it owns, reflecting a 61% increase in capacity compared to 2024.

In the Aug. 6 post, Lego stated it has taken a “range of steps across [its] sites to drive reductions.” These measures include installing solar panels and developing solar parks on or near production sites, alongside investments aimed at improving energy efficiency.
Among current projects, Lego is constructing its largest solar installation to date at its Billund headquarters, which is expected to generate enough clean power to match the site's total annual electricity consumption. Additionally, the company is supporting the development of a solar park in Virginia, featuring 30,000 solar panels and rooftop solar installations.
These initiatives complement the rooftop solar panels and battery energy storage systems Lego is deploying at its Vietnam manufacturing facility. Last year, the company reported installing over 12,400 rooftop solar panels at the Vietnam factory, with a projected total solar power capacity of approximately 7.34-megawatt peak—a unit measuring the maximum power output of a photovoltaic system.
In 2025, Lego announced a goal to increase its global solar capacity by 72% by the end of that year to reduce its carbon footprint. At that time, the company indicated plans to expand solar power capacity across its production sites, having already begun infrastructure development in Hungary and at its Vietnam factory.
Lego also revealed last week that nearly half of its company cars now operate on electric power, with continued efforts to transition its global vehicle fleet.
The company maintains its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 37% by 2032, relative to a 2019 baseline.
